Evolving Salmon Habitats

Scientist have conducted studies that indicate that melting glaciers, due to global warming, can lead to thousands of kilometers of new pacific salmon habitats. Certain melting glaciers that contain a shallow enough gradient (less than 10% incline) can become favorable habitats for these salmon in the future. The scientists identified 315 glaciers that met this criteria in their study. These changes can become very beneficial for the salmon as they will be able to quickly inhabit these new habitats and begin to build up their population. While global warming and climate change are generally looked upon as negative, there are certain aspects that can be positive, such as the topics discussed in this article. But just because a single aspect is positive doesn't mean that climate change is a good thing, and it doesn't even mean that it is a good thing for the salmon. These new habitats in the arctic come at a tradeoff because the salmon are facing warmer waters, changes in stream flows, and poor ocean conditions. This is an example of why we have to prepare for climate change in the future and prepare for the changes it is going to inflict on our planet. In order to protect our planet the strategies need to include changes that will inevitably take place in the future due to climate change.
