Climate change is destroying the arctic coasts
The artic coasts have always been slowly eroding but due to the increase in severity of climate change and global warming, they are now eroding at an accelerating rate. The eroding coast brings on a multitude of problems for this region of the world. The warming soil will melt the permafrost and release carbon into the atmosphere which will contribute to climate change. This melting soil can also deteriorate the shape of the coast and destroy coastal infrastructure, as well as release soil into the ocean which can have an effect on the ocean as a carbon bank. Not only is more and more land mass being lost in absolute terms; with each degree of temperature increase, the annual rate of erosion increases -- in meters, but also in millions of tons of carbon released. If greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, this rate of erosion could more than double by 2100, which would be extremely detrimental.
