The impact of Human Sewage on Coastal Ecosystems

It is known that every year sewage flows out of human pipes and into our waterways, polluting the water and destroying the ecosystem, but new mapping technology has helped scientists discover the true effects of our sewage runoff. The effects of sewage are not necessarily visible on the surface but are always visible in the water. The water is deeply polluted and it has other indirect effects. Sewage leads to a great increase in nitrogen in the water and the scientists discovered nitrogen and pathogen inputs into the ocean from sewage for about 135,000 watersheds. An excess amount of nitrogen in the water will lead to the overgrowth of certain aquatic plants and algae, which have been mentioned as a negative part of the ecosystem. This new study shows yet another effect of humans on the environment and while sewage polluted water can be treated, the real solutions come from the source.
