Warming Arctic allows for Toxic Algal Blooms
Widespread blooms of toxic algae are usually rare but due to the warming marine ecosystem in the artic, they are projected to become more common, which would be detrimental to the wildlife in the area. Most algae are helpful to marine ecosystems but some species contain neurotoxins that can be deadly, and these blooms would are going to be promoted by the warmer waters. The toxins can also cause illness and mortality of marine wildlife such as larger fish, marine mammals, and seabirds. This is both a problem for the animals but also for the humans that rely on those animals for food. Climate change has warmed the waters in the Alaskan Arctic area to the point where it is no longer too cold for major toxic algal blooms. This shows another environmental problem that is directly related to climate change and global warming and once again the solutions will be the same.
