Perigean Spring Tide and Coastal Flooding

The Flower Moon
On the night between Tuesday 5/25/21 and Wednesday 5/26/21, a full moon appeared in the sky. This full moon dubbed "The Flower Moon" gains its significance from being the full moon that is closest to Earth this year. During this moon and in the following days the tidal range will reflect a very large increase caused by The Flower Moon, these tides are called King Tides, and more specifically this tide is called the Perigean Spring Tide. This increase in tidal range will cause costal flooding and erosion in many areas. While this is a natural phenomenon, rising ocean levels amplifies the problem. Experts are saying that the flooding caused by the King Tides and the Perigean Spring tide provide a glimpse of what future sea level rise will look like. New Jersey is now joining the MyCoast website and app and is asking residents to document coastal flooding and upload it to the MyCoast app. This is in efforts to not only to build a database of frequently flooded areas, but to help the public view and understand the flooding they see in their neighborhood in the context of rising sea levels worldwide. If you are a resident of New Jersey, I encourage you to participate in this program using this link and you can read more about their efforts using this link. The problem of rising sea levels is a very large hurdle but programs like this show that we are moving in the right direction.
